Walk for the Cure

Today Kevin, Sam and I had the privilege of participating in a 5K breast cancer awareness walk/run. (Andrew - the 12 year old birthday boy- and Scott are camping with the Boy Scouts. My sweet friend Julie organized the event through our church. Today is the one year anniversary of Julie's Mastectomy. She is a proud cancer survivor. We also did this walk in honor of Grandma BoBo who is just beginning this courageous journey. Also in our hearts was Ms. Polly who starts her Chemo on the 16th. One thing these three special women have in common is a devoted relationship with Jesus Christ. I had the honor of watching Julie handle this illness with the peace that surpasses all understanding. Her strength was none other than amazing. Through out her journey she has kept the proper perspective and her focus never wavered from Jesus.
Often when we are faced with great adversity, we are quick to blame God and question His character. If He was a loving God, why does this happen? Those are natural questions for sure. We need to remember, no matter what the trial that lays before us, be it cancer, loneliness, beating addiction, fighting a falling stock market, you name it... God is firmly in control. No matter what happens in this life, God's character is never changing. He is the same yesterday, today and will be the same tomorrow. He IS a loving and gracious God. He wants only the very best for us. We may never know why certain things are allowed to happen to us but we can count on this: We will never be alone. He never leaves our side. He is with us through every treatment, every struggle, every tear, every ounce of anxiety, every fear.. all of it. We need to claim the promise that He will never leave us or forsake us. In His strength we can do ALL things even beat this nasty disease called cancer.
