Everyone knows that Virginia is filled with wonderful historical landmarks all thorough out the state. The Northern VA and Washington DC area holds so many monuments and battle grounds that I do not think we could see it all if we went somewhere every day for 3 years! We decided to take the boys on a little field trip yesterday. Scott found Manassas National Park where the Civil War Battle of Manassas occurred. It was a great opportunity to teach the boys a little something about the Civil War. Here is where my Yankee comes into play. I had never heard of the battle of Manassas. I just assumed it was one of the lesser battles of the Civil War, not a huge deal in the scope of the history of the entire war. WRONG! Apparently Southerners refer to this first real battle of the Civil War as the Battle of Manassas. We Yankees call it the Battle of Bull Run. OOOOHHHHHHH! Light bulbs flashing as I eargarly looked around the battle ground from the historic place that Stone Wall Jackson got his name. We all had a great time taking in the landscape and hearing the stories of events that occurred almost 148 years to the day. (Battle occurred on 21 July 1861). Although a beautiful place my heart could not help break for the many wives, children and mothers who lost loved ones on that very farm land. My mind continued to wander back to what it would have been like to walk that same ground on July 26th of 1861. Very eerie indeed. It is my hope that our sons would not loose sight of the fact that we live in the greatest nation in the world. It is a place where the service men and women of our great nation give up their very own lives to protect the freedom that so many have gone before and died for. Enjoy some photos of our trip:)
