Leadership...

is not always convenient...
Saturday was the first race of his Senior year.

He has worked so hard all summer long training, planning, visualizing his races etc.

Sometimes your hard work pays off…
and sometimes it does not.

This week, it did not pay off.
He was over a minute off his PR.  He felt awful physically and his mental confidence took a rough blow.  He was shaken and upset, frustrated and angry… but

He is also the team co Captain.
It is times like these that leadership is not convenient.
One of my proudest moment in this boy's life occurred this weekend.
He did not close up inside himself and his anger and frustration.  No.  Although his heart was breaking, he celebrated his friend's PR's and fantastic season starts.  He cheered on his new JV team members in their first ever races.  He celebrated with his strong JV team showing and with his Varsity squad for their second place victory at the invitational.
Leadership is about serving those around you.  Sometimes that means putting aside your own personal hurt and disappointment and celebrating with those around you.
He did.  And he did it with grace and genuine sincerity.
He gets it.  He really gets what it means to be a leader.
I could not be more proud than had he PR'd in the hugest race of the season!
