We just received the following email from Laci's Dad. They are in HI receiving treatment. Please continue praying for this sweet little girl....
Thank you so much for your prayers and support.
We have had a very sudden and dramatic turn of events today. Laci was doing so great the last 2 days we thought we had beat this and were on our way home. This morning was some good news with very good report on the MRI. The swelling in the cerebrum has shrunk dramatically, almost all gone. However, Laci began the morning with a headache which quickly progressed and began some vomiting again. Blood test showed very positive for infection. Spinal tap also showed very high white blood cell count, meaning infection. Initial lab findings point to bacterial meningitis, Neisseria. This is extremely bad and dangerous. Not sure how she got it. The hole in her head has been leaking since the drain was removed Thursday. They placed another suture today to cinch it up. This would be the most likely source of infection but the particular bacteria is not usually found in the skin so things don't really add up. Her CSF fluid was tested on Thursday and was negative, the drain catheter was also tested and found to be negative.
Today has been very emotionally draining and very frustrating day. They wanted us, the whole family, to take some prophylactic antibiotic, we waited almost 5 hours for it and finally left the hospital and will wait until tomorrow to get it. My parents left yesterday since Laci was looking so good and my newborn niece is having some heart problems so they wanted to get back. Now my mom feels terrible that she left us.
Laci has slept most of the day and looks pretty lifeless like before when this whole thing started. She is on morphine and Toradol again. It seems like we are starting all over. She will most likely be in the hospital for 2 more weeks now. They moved her back into the Pediatric ICU. We have had so many doctors it is hard to keep up with them all and of course they don't' all agree with each other. However, we know that it was caught early and so all think her chances are good.
Please continue to pray. Keeping the faith, running the race with endurance.
Keith
