Kayaking on the Fishkill River
I am having Blog issues... The title labeler is not working... My Blogging Apologies...
Yesterday, Grammy and Papa decided to brave kayaking with the boys for the first time. Dad and I took Andrew out about a week ago on a calm lake to see if he was capable of rowing and maneuvering his kayak. He was a champ. Alright... He was really more disappointed that we did not hit any "Rapids" on the lake. We decided that since Andrew seemed so able bodied on the lake, he would more than likely be OK on this little river that fed into the lake. We rented two tandem kayaks and put Sam (now affectionately referred to as "The Anchor") and Papa in one and Grammy and Kevin in another. Andrew and I both had our very own boats.
Here they are... ready to set sail!!!
Here are Grammy and Kevin setting sail! Kevin picked up the rowing pattern very quickly. Papa thinks he is ready to row his own next time we go out!
Here go Papa and Sammy. Sam did pretty well too. I think he needs another year before we let him brave his own boat. He did, however make a fine coxman. You could hear him all over the river shouting "Left Right" at the top of his lungs!!!
Here he is... Andrew Payne, making great strides in his paddling abilities....
Everything was going beautifully until the fateful moment when Grammy thought that Andrew's energy levels were drooping. She thought she had just the thing that would perk him right back up. She kindly offered him a Werther's Original. While her intentions were pure, what happened as a result was cause for concern.
Andrew, not one to pass up candy of any sort, happily paddled over to retrieve his prize. What happened after that was a comedy of errors. Andrew reached, Grammy passed, Andrew reached too far and promptly fell right into the river. He did awesome. He kept his cool and was able to crawl up on the back of Grammy's Kayak.
Here is Papa bilging out Andrew's boat...
Andrew on the back...
We docked and finished emptying Andrew's Kayak.
After we got Andrew up and moving, we paddled a while longer. We stopped at a neat dock along the river and had a great lunch!!! Here is a picture at our picnic site:)
The ride back was a little more difficult due to the current, but everyone did great. Poor Grammy decided to take Sam as her ship mate... Sam out weighs Kevin by nearly 10 pounds. Makes a big difference in how much you need to paddle. Hence the name "Anchor"!
Here are a few more fun shots of the day....
