Take Me Out To The Ball Game....

Baseball season on Camp Foster has commenced. "Game Day", as we were calling it here at the House of Payne, was Saturday. Kevin and Sam had the first game of the season with a thrilling contest between the Red Devils and Kev and Sam's own Bullets. Scott and I will say up front that we are well aware of what the picture of the bullet depicted on the front of the boy's jersey really resembles... In fact at the beginning of the game, Scott quietly came up beside me and whispered in my ear: "What the hell is that on the boys' jerseys????" The cool thing is that the Japanese written on the shirts says "Bullets". It was an awesome game. We do not keep score in coach pitch, but we are convinced that if we did, the Bullets would have walked away the victors. All but one of our players got a hit in the game. The Red Devils did not share the same fate. Coach played Kevin at short stop, where he had some really great plays. He knows exactly how to play the position and it was fun to watch him cover second when the second baseman was otherwise occupied. We just need to remind Kevin that he is not a utility infielder that plays all positions at the same time... He does not handle incompetence well at all. His best buddy Ryan plays first and they connect real well. Good plays had there:) Sammy was the solid anchor sharing center field with his pal Luke.

Here is Kev at his first at bat. He had one double and one single that could have been a double had the runner in front of him ran to third... The most you can hit is a double, so he is batting pretty well!!! Note the Red Sox batting gloves...

We are soooo proud of Sam. He is one of the youngest on the team, but he is playing so well!!! He also pounded the ball for two solid singles. Once coach realized he was a lefty and started batting him that way, he has taken off. Not to mention all those hours of playing catch with his brothers at the end of Grammy and Papa's street this summer paid off in the outfield. He has the makings of a great outfielder with a strong solid arm!!! Here he is leading off of first like he is in the "Big Leagues". Dare I say too much YES network this summer????

Last for the Bullets, we have a Go Bullets Cheer! I absolutely love the batting gloves hanging from the pocket! Too cute!!!

Andrew had to wait through 2 rain storms all the way until 5 pm to play his opening game against the mighty Tornados. Andrew played very well at first base during this game. His teammates threw the ball well over his head, but he was able to chase down the ball before the runners advanced. He also had one almost catch that would have been amazing... He was reaching for a through from third that fell just short. He knew he needed to keep his foot on the bag so the rest of him was spread out in a near split!!! He told us later that he knew that was how Andy Phillips would have made the play. Unfortunately poor Richard on third could not get it in the air long enough to make it to Andrew. He will though... He plays a mean third base. Andrew's team played well for three innings and were up by 2 going into the 4th. With a pitching change the world unraveled for the Mighty Diamond Backs and they lost their game 12 - 9. I felt bad for the pitcher. This kid pitch league is rather frustrating, because very little depends on the skill of the team. It all matters how well the kids pitch and the catcher catches the ball. Runners steal bases on dropped balls by the catcher. We have taken to calling it "Steal Ball". Unfortunately Andrew's field is not that conducive to taking pictures. I did manage a couple though one of the holes in the chain link fence. Although he had no hits, he had a great eye and got on base both times up to bat by walking and scored once. Here is our future A Rod!!!
