Sunday Snapshot: National Capital and Library of Congress Tour

We are so fortunate to be living just outside of Washington, DC.  Like any good military family knows, our time here is more than likely limited!  We are due for orders this time next year.  We are not sure what God has planned for us, but we do know we want to take advantage of as much as possible while living in this amazing part of the country.  Every week this summer break I have vowed to take the boys SOMEWHERE with historic importance or a National Landmark.  Last week it was the National Zoo, this week it was the National Capitol and the Library of Congress!  I have never been on a Capital tour before!  I was so impressed!  Our guided was extremely knowledgeable and we all learned a great deal about this most famous and powerful building.  

My little tourists who had just completed the LONG hike from the White House to the Capital in the extreme heat and were still smiling... sort of.

 Dead Center of Washington, DC is marked with this star in the Capital.  It also marks the spot of an empty crypt below that was intended for Washington's burial.  Washington chose instead to be buried at his beloved home, Mount Vernon.  Kevin was jazzed just to put his foot on it!!!

We got to view the room where the first House met during the early history of our great nation!  The circular room was adorned with these beautiful columns and draperies!

The exact location of John Quincy Adam's desk!  He is also the only person to serve in the house AFTER serving as President!

The long hallway that leads to where the current house was debating the debt ceiling!!!  Incredible to know we where that close to where these ever important issues are being decided!  Humbling!

Breath. Taking.

One of the highlights of this tour was seeing Thomas Jefferson's personal Library!  The boys were breathless as they exclaimed:  "Thomas Jefferson's hands touched these books!" and "He read Sherlock Holmes!!!!"

This is seriously an incredible building with such beautiful architecture.  The boys enjoyed reliving scenes from National Treasures.
